- Establish rapport
- Make client comfortable
- Explain procedure to client and ensure privacy
- Assist client to undress and wear a gown
- Help her into a dorsal position on a couch
- Wash, dry and warm hands
- Expose both breasts and inspect
- Cover one breast and expose the other
- Ask woman to put hand of the part to be examined under her head
- Support heavy breast with one hand and palpate the breasts systematically in a circular manner using the inner aspect of fingers and teach the client breast self-examination
- Squeeze the nipple gently for fluid, clean with swab and examine the fluid
- Repeat the same process for other breast
- Assist client to redress
- Communicate findings to client and thank her
- Wash and dry hands
- Record and report finings
