1. Establish rapport and explain procedure to the client
  2. Wash and dry hands
  3. Put on examination gloves
  4. Position baby on a safe flat surface
  5. Unwrap the baby, do general observation and cover baby with a clean sheet
  6. Examine baby’s head, face and neck
  7. Examine the chest, abdomen and cord
  8. Examine the arms and hands
  9. Examine the genitalia and tests patency of rectum
  10. Examine hips and lower extremities
  11. Examine the back of the baby
  12. Wrap and place baby back into cot or send to mother
  13. Communicate findings and thank her
  14. Wash and dry hands
  15. Record and report findings
