- Establish rapport and explain procedure to the client
- Wash and dry hands
- Put on examination gloves
- Position baby on a safe flat surface
- Unwrap the baby, do general observation and cover baby with a clean sheet
- Examine baby’s head, face and neck
- Examine the chest, abdomen and cord
- Examine the arms and hands
- Examine the genitalia and tests patency of rectum
- Examine hips and lower extremities
- Examine the back of the baby
- Wrap and place baby back into cot or send to mother
- Communicate findings and thank her
- Wash and dry hands
- Record and report findings
